Important Question, ANSWER AND RECEIVE A COOKIE.

Okay so maybe not a cookie as such! JUST MY ETERNAL APPRECIATION!! By the way, I apologise in advance for the number of deviations still in my dev inbox too. I promise to get through all 175 deviations either tonight, or tommorow morning! <3 (it's fathers day here in the U.K on Sunday, so I best take care of it tonight actaully~)

ANYWAY, I have a question, and it'd be really helpful if anyone could atleast set me in the right direction!

_{So, here we go:}

I have so many fanart ideas for FFX, it's not even funny. I love this game so much, and everytime I play it 10000 different ideas come to my head all at once - nothing else inspires such powerful subjectivity, actual meaning to a picture than this game.

Yeah yeah D; Ima keep to the canon though. There'll be no Jecht/Braska yaoi popping up unexpectedly, that's for sure!

Also will probably include stuff from FFX-2. *trills*

I digress though. In short, yes, I've unfortunatley been thinking about butchering the awesomeness of this game by haphhazardly contructing some form of art book from my own CGs. I'd like to finish it before I turn 18, so I have a few years to work away at it and improve my skill at the same time. Hopefully it'll turn out half decent. *SHOT*

THE PROBLEM IS that I have no idea what's involved with this sort of thing. Say for instance I wanted to go to a con and sell it - I couldn't, right? Because ~~NO ONE WOULD BUY IT~~ of copyright restrictions. I don't understand, then, how people can sell fanart prints/keychains/doujinshi etc, because they 'need the money'? Aren't they making profit out of someone elses work?

What I'm asking is: How are they allowed to make a profit from fanart (not just enough to breakeven with the cost of printing/binding/laminating or whatever) when it goes against copyrights? I'm missing something here, I'm sure of it. DD8 *failtrain*

Any input, any whatsoever will be massively appreciated!

It's cropped from a gift pic that I gave my sister for her birthday (Yeah, that's right, I'm scamming my own flesh and blood by trying to pass my art off as being something of actual worth. *dies*) She accepted it anyway, which was a relief. I hadn't gotten her anything else, dammit! =o

Things to Do

Finish art trades.
Plan out Cancer Zodiac image for the Zodiac series.
Decide on the subject of the collab between me and ~sunshee
Discuss FFX artbook with my sister.

Well , after I see my seniors doing a Hetalia doujinshi , it's probably that you just have to copyright the actual owner by word like sorta.

It's more of a "I copyright the owner" thingy.It hasn't been an issue here in Singapore. My sensei does Naruto and Bleach bookmarks (which sells of well the past year). Well , try to avoid bookmarks. Alot of people in the booths from I know from different cons sell bookmarks , TOO effing many >BC. Plus the fact that it's not Singapore , it's UK.Well , you're 15 and alot moe talented than me.

Well , my advise from me to you is actually to join a group that does anime and maybe you could do a collab book with the team and split the mooleh. Mehhh.

So, what you're saying is, aslong as I write somewhere in the book that FFX is copyright Square Enix etc, then it can be sold for a profit without me getting sued for copyright infringement? This is so confusing. X___x *dies*

Joining a group sounds awesome, but I wouldn't be much use in an anime group. I don't really draw it anymore, atleast I don't think I do. I'm kinda going for the crappy art noveau sort of realism now, which....isn't going all that well, but I'll keep practicing! xDD;

I'm not sure. The Lemon Tree Parade SasuNaru fanbook for example, is a non-profit project. That might be because numerous artists and authors are contributing though, so it'd be too difficult to split the costs? X__x Gah, maybe I should speak to the editors of it, perhaps they'd let me know what's going on with that.

So it's okay to make profit off of a copyrighted piece of work, as long as you state the copyrights?

I hope it's that easy anyway xD Thank you so much for your input!

Things seem to work oddly when it comes to fanart. Though I suppose these companies, for the most part, see fanart as free promotion. It's really not a loss to them since there is no official equivalent of fanart that sales of fanart are taking away from.
